Fertilize
If you didn’t do it in March, go ahead and fertilize your shrubs. Flowers and trees can be fertilized this month, too! We recommend PlantTone in general. Holly Tone is excellent for evergreen shrubs like hollies and camellias.
Plant
Get your garden veggies going! Plant the following vegetables this month:
- beets
- cabbage
- Chinese cabbage (Napa)
- Swiss chard
- broccoli
- cauliflower
- beans
- sunflowers
Prune
The following plants should be pruned AFTER flowers fade:
- Azalea
- Lilac
- Forsythia
- Spirea
- Weigela
The following plants should be pruned WHILE flowering:
- Holly
- Pyracantha
If needed, trim these flowering trees:
- Cherry
- Redbud
Cut out winter damage that may have occurred.
Lawn
- Begin mowing this month (if you haven’t already).
- Apply a fertilizer/pre-emergent weed control.
- Turn on your irrigation if you have it.
Mulch
Mulch your landscape plants. You can use any of the following for mulching:
- Pine Straw
- Hardwood or Dyed Mulch
