April Garden Tips

Spring is FINALLY arriving and we know you are ready to get back in the garden!  Ready to get to work, but not quite sure where to start?  Check out the tips below to know what you need to be working on in April.

Fertilize

If you didn’t do it in March, go ahead and fertilize your shrubs.  Flowers and trees can be fertilized this month, too!

Plant

Get your garden veggies going!  Plant the following vegetables this month:

  • beets
  • cabbage
  • Chinese cabbage (Napa)
  • Swiss chard
  • broccoli
  • cauliflower
  • beans
  • sunflowers

Prune

The following plants should be pruned AFTER flowers fade:

  • Azalea
  • Lilac
  • Forsynthia
  • Spirea
  • Weigela

The following plants should be pruned WHILE flowering:

  • Holly
  • Pyracantha

If needed, trim these flowering trees:

  • Cherry
  • Redbud

Cut out winter damage that may have occurred.

Lawn

  • Begin mowing this month (if you haven’t already).
  • Apply a fertilizer/pre-emergent weed control.
  • Turn on your irrigation if you have it.

Mulch

Mulch your landscape plants. You can use any of the following for mulching:

  • Pine Straw
  • Hardwood or Dyed Mulch

If you are interested in having mulch delivered, we do that!  Call the Garden Center at (919)484-9759.

What else?

Visit your local garden center! (Yes, that is US!!)  Next weekend, we will be fully stocked in the coming weeks with tropicals, annuals, perennials, herbs, veggies…all those things that you just can’t wait to get your hands on!
