Events Intern (spring semester 2022)

About FGS:

For Garden’s Sake is an awesome Garden Center in Durham, NC. Our events department is pretty new but it’s growing faster than pumpkin seeds and we need some extra help! 2022 will be our first full calendar year with a full-time events coordinator and we are planning some amazing events, classes, workshops, concerts, and more. It is important that our events team recognizes that the events department is just one part of FGS, and our visions and goals must align with our Garden Center, landscape, and lawn care departments. We are all one big team!

About the position:

This is an internship with a three-month commitment (spring semester, fall semester, or summer). You’ll see lots of variety and your creative muscles will be exercised here!

FGS does all types of events. We do classes, workshops, concerts, family and kids events, private events (such as baby showers, birthday parties, wedding showers, holiday parties, and graduation parties), staff events, and lots more. Your ideas for new types of events are always welcome!

Some of the tasks and responsibilities will include interacting with clients and customers, answering phone and emails regarding upcoming events, data entry, assisting the Events Coordinator (and occasionally assisting the Digital Marketing Specialist), running errands (both events-related and office-related), research, managing registration forms, preparing event materials, decorating, putting together gift bags and other event material/giveaway materials, and light cleaning.

Prior, during, and after events: set up of tables, chairs, coffee stations, class supplies, and signage; sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, wiping glass, disinfecting surfaces, washing dishes, and taking out trash; directing customers and clients, answering FAQs, collecting survey responses, and working with FGS staff on timelines, materials, and expectations.

The three main avenues of this position are office work, event setup/teardown, and event assistance during events. You may be cross-trained to assist in our bar as an extra hand during events.

Important Details:

  • Roughly 20 hours a week; will vary depending on the event calendar
  • Part-time
  • While we will strive to provide you with a regular schedule, the nature of events means that you will be required to work nights, weekends, and some holidays. Flexibility is key.
  • This position requires talking, listening, reading and writing, and lifting. Reasonable accommodation will be made when necessary.

This is an in-person, on-site position; all events are in-person events.

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in marketing, business, theater/arts administration, communications, management, or any other similar/related field. Persons pursuing an undergraduate degree are highly encouraged to apply. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may apply. Freshmen may apply but priority will be given to upperclassmen.
  • 3.0+ GPA preferred
  • Currently enrolled at time of internship in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Google Suite experience (Drive, Gmail, etc.)
  • An individual who values integrity, honesty, hard work, setting personal goals, and open communication
  • Ability to work both with and without supervision
  • Possess organizational skills

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with event planning, theater (especially technical theater), and/or marketing
  • Any level of experience with Canva, WordPress, and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Public speaking skills
  • Volunteer work in highschool
