Growing cool season vegetables in the Triangle region presents unique challenges and rewards. Topics will include species and varieties that can be successfully raised when the tomatoes and peppers have finally finished. Planning early for late-season planting as well as the different demands of Fall temperature, moisture and soil depletion will all be discussed. Also of interest will be techniques and materials that will abet over-wintering of certain crops as well as preparing beds in the Fall for Spring planting next season.
Presenters: Brenda Stone-Wiggins, Durham County Master Gardener

Raised beds can be of great advantage to the vegetable and herb gardener.  Ergonomics, disease control, saving water, extending the planting season and better soil management are only a few of the reasons to consider raised beds.  Topics covered will include siting as well as suggested materials for building beds.  We’ll also discuss incorporating soil, using ancillary devices such as row covers, bird and rabbit netting, tomato cages and suspension devices, arbors, water, crop rotation and companion planting.  There will also be mention of pollinators, pest and disease control, documenting your crops and other topics as requested.

Presenter: Doug Roach, Durham County Master Gardener
